On January 18, President of the Artsakh Republic Arayik Harutyunyan chaired an extended meeting of the Security Council attended by representatives of the political forces of the National Assembly as well.
The consequences of the 38-day-long humanitarian crisis in Artsakh caused by the blockade of the Stepanakert-Goris highway by Azerbaijan, as well as mechanisms to overcome them were addressed during the meeting.
The President informed that on January 15, by the mediation of the Russian peacekeepers a communication was conducted with the Azerbaijani side to resolve the situation. No progress was registered towards reopening of the only highway connecting Artsakh to the outer world. Instead, new serious problems were created as a result of the gas supply disruption on January 17.
The need to adapt the steps implemented in the socio-economic sphere to the crisis situation was emphasized at the meeting of the Security Council. The republic's President gave instructions to the heads of authorized state structures. Head of the Operational Headquarter, State Minister Ruben Vardanyan will soon present specific proposals for further ensuring the livelihood of the population and overcoming the humanitarian crisis under the conditions of the blockade.
